Abstract:

Environmentally friendly nature and the direct impact of gabion weirs on the quality parameters of rivers as well as simple design and construction of such structures, has putted them under consideration in the recent years. In this research, Hydraulic parameters of gabion crump weirs including water surface profile, discharge coefficient and through flow discharge are investigated numerically in free flow condition using flow-3d software. A total number of 18 models comprising 6 different geometries studied in 3 different porosities of 43%,44% an 46%. Results indicate that increasing the average diameter of particles (d50) leads to the increase of through flow discharge in addition to discharge coefficient and friction loss. Also increasing the side slopes of weirs, decreases the discharge coefficient and through flow discharge. In addition, it is shown that the downstream slope has a slightly larger effect on discharge coefficient where upstream slope’s effect on through flow discharge is higher. Finally, using multivariate non-linear regression analysis, experimental equations were developed in order to estimate the discharge coefficient and the through flow discharge.

CFD SIMULATION OF FLOW OVER CONTRACTED COMPOUND ARCHED RECTANGULAR SHARP CRESTED WEIRS

Measurement of discharge in open channels is one of the main concerns in hydraulic engineering. The structures used for this aim should be accurate, economical and easy to use. Weirs are among the oldest and most convenient hydraulic structures that have been used in both laboratory and field for flow measurement in open channels. Due to limitations of simple sharp crested weirs, recently compo...

Threshold Submergence of Flow over PK Weirs

In this study an extensive experimental research is carried out to develop a better understanding of the effects of Piano Key (PK) weir geometry on weir flow threshold submergence. Experiments were conducted in a 12 m long, 0.4 m wide and 0.7 m deep rectangular glass wall flume. The main objectives were to investigate the effect of the PK weir geometries including the weir length, weir height, ...

Air Entrainment and Energy Dissipation on Gabion Stepped Weirs

In the last three decades the design of stepped spillways regained some interest because of their suitability with new construction methods including gabion placement. In this study, the hydraulic performances of gabion stepped weirs were investigated experimentally in terms of the air-water flow properties and energy dissipation rate. A physical study was performed in a relatively large size f...

Numerical simulation of nanofluid flow over diamond-shaped elements in tandem in laminar and turbulent flow

In this paper, the Al2O3-water nanofluid flow in laminar and turbulent flows inside tubes fitted with diamond-shaped turbulators is numerically modeled. The nanofluid flow is modeled by employing a two-phase mixture method and applying the constant heat flux boundary condition at tube walls. In the results, the effects of different parameters such as the geometry of turbulators, volume fraction...

Effect of Crest Roughness on Flow Characteristics over Circular Weirs

Different construction materials with different roughness used to make circular weirs highly affect surface roughness and, in turn, flow hydraulics passing over these structures.  In the present research, numerous experiments under different hydraulic conditions were performed on a physical model to study the effects of roughness on flow hydraulics over a circular weir. The flow hydraulics incl...

Numerical Simulation of Partial Cavitation over Axisymmetric Bodies: VOF Method vs. Potential Flow Theory

A computational study of partial cavitation over axisymmetric bodies is presented using two numerical methods. The first method is based on the VOF technique where transient 2D Navier-Stokes equations are solved along with an equation to track the cavity interface. Next, the steady boundary element method (BEM) based on potential flow theory is presented. The results of the two methods for a di...
